February 2015: Museums in Miami

Pérez Art Museum Miami aka PAMM

Miami’s newest art museum should be a major player in the art world compared to how its other museums have always seemed like footnotes. The huge building sits proudly on the water in front of the new version of the Frost Museum of Science coming soon and in the same park that holds the American Airlines Arena to the south. The outside is other-worldly with it’s huge porticos featuring humongous hanging plants.

The inside is a nice mix of large rooms over several floors. While I didn’t love the Antoni Tàpies: From Within exhibit only because I’m not a fan of the artist’s work, there was much to admire in Global Positioning Systems, a multi-artist exhibit featuring an eclectic mix of art from around and about the world. Highly recommended also is Verde, the museum’s water facing restaurant with both indoor and outdoor seating. Make a reservation to avoid an at least hour long wait!

Bass Museum of Art

It was worth visiting the Bass just to see it one more time in its current state before it closes for over a year to undergo a major renovation. One of the featured exhibits, One Way: Peter Marino, turned out to be a delight all by itself. How often do you get to see one person’s private collection on display? And what are the chances that we would have the same taste?!? Marino is the architect of choice for luxury brands needing a glass and polished metal flagship store. He also is a (straight?) leather daddy with a great art collection featuring Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Robert Mapplethorpe, and David LaChapelle among others. Fun stuff!

Also on display were an exhibit called Gold, featuring works using the color gold, and tc: temporary contemporary, a wonderful outdoor public art project that continues during the museum's closure (see video).
