WIth opening night delayed and delayed yet again I finally had to go see Spiderman (as did most of the critics). The show actually isn't without its merits. The first act is an exquisitely staged and interestingly designed piece with really bad music and dialogue, but at least it tells a linear story and the flying stunts are THRILLING! The second act though is god-awful and so poorly conceived! It makes no sense (Spidey seems to be moping around a lot) and the creators obviously didn't know in advance what sets they needed to build because they didn't bother to build any, relying on projections instead. I seriously had no idea what was going on and was so bored I wanted to leave. I didn't detect any major changes from what people have been blogging since the show's first previews. My advice is to scrap the entire second act and to expand and improve the first. Since this show belongs in Vegas, make it an intermissionless Vegas 90-minutes. The staging of the first act, especially the aerial fights as well as beautiful moments like the spider goddess's woven silk strap routine besting anything by Cirque du Soleil, makes up for the awful score by personal favorite U2 (shame on them!). Bravo to set designer George Tsypin (yes, the same guy who designed The Little Mermaid's ugly, uninteresting, boringly symmetrical sets) for the first act's pop-up book style sets which bring the world of comic book panels to theatrical life!
